Personality:
Alex has the gifts of looks, wit, humour and brains. He flirts rather a lot and can sometimes be a bit cocky, thinking he's God's gift to women. On the surface, he seems like a complete ass because he surrounds himself with a shell, but once you get past that, he's a genuine, sweet guy with more than a few insecurities. He's a great friend and an even greater boyfriend, but he's been put through a lot by a girl. That's why he flirts, but he shys away from actual relationships. This makes people think that he's a typical guy with a fear of comittment, but that's not it. He iscomitted, to work, and to his friends, and his patients. He'd lay down his life for his friends, and does absolutely everything he can for his patients.
Past: Alex had a pretty secure home life as a child - his parents are still together, and he grew up in a big house in a suburban area of New York. His life was great - until he hit thirteen.
He was sent to an all-boys school... but he was bullied because he had a "girly" surname. He was pretty tolerant of it, then about a year after it started, he snapped.
One guy started taking the mick out of him, and he completely lost his temper and lashed out. The guy ended up in hospital with a broken jaw.
Alex's parents would have freaked, were it not for an even bigger problem in their homelife. His older brother, Jackson, had recently been caught doing drugs. Not wimpy, soft drugs - hard drugs. Heroin.
Alex found himself struggling for attention from his parents, because no matter what he did, it was ignored because they were too busy concentrating on Jackson's drug problem.
Suddenly, Alex found himself not eating. He was also becoming completely obsessed with his weight. He was suffering from anorexia nervosa, a disease more commonly found in teenage girls.
When he discovered from his school doctor that he had anorexia, he wouldn't admit it to anyone. He'd get killed.
So the anorexia got worse, and worse - until he found himself fighting for his life in hospital. He was practically a skeleton, and his heart had stopped. He was in the ICU, on a machine keeping his heart going, in a coma.
When he woke up, he got the worst news he could get. Jackson had died of an overdose of heroin. Alex hadn't got to say goodbye, hadn't got to bear his brother's coffin... and felt he hadn't been there for Jackson in his time of need.
But the self-hate, in some perverse way, gave him what he needed to keep going. He put the weight back on, and gradually, finally, beat the battle against his eating disorder.
Because he'd been on the verge of death on a heart machine, he decided he wanted to become a cardiosurgeon.
Alex worked like hell, graduated top of his class at his high school, and graduated first at NYU.
At NYU, he met a girl called Ellie. They started going out. They ended up going out for four years. Alex was deeply in love, and was going to propose, but it turned out Ellie had been cheating on him, with his best friend. She tried to get Alex back, but he was so hurt, he didn't want to hear it. It left him with some serious trust issues, and he's not sure if he'll ever trust a girl again.
He got offered an internship at St. Meredith's hospital, one of the best and toughest in the States, and decided to move out west to Seattle to escape from the ghosts of his past. Since leaving, he hasn't been back to New York. And it doesn't look likely that he will.
Other: Alex has a higher likelihood of heart problems due to his teenage anorexia, and is also at risk of infertility and several other health problems. He loves listening to rock music, reading and plays guitar, piano and drums.
